What color codes are commonly used?

Select the proper color for your pipe markers, and for pipe markers to be printed on-site, load your printer with the appropriate blank materials.

The most common color combinations are based on ANSI A13.1 standards. The ANSI color codes are listed as follows:

  • Red: Fire Quencing Materials,
  • Yellow: Materials Inherently Hazardous,
  • Gas Blue: Materials of Inherently Low Hazard,
  • Liquid Green: Materials of Inherently Low Hazard

In practice, most ANSI pipe markers use a yellow background. DIN, APWA and the Ammonia standards offer alternative color schemes. Many plants favor pipe marking schemes that do not match the ANSI standards. They may color code by system or train, for example.
