What
bar-code type is best?
Although there are dozens of varieties
of bar-codes, the two most popular choices are Code 3-of-9 and Code
128. Although Code 3-of-9 is the most popular, Code 128 is gaining
in market acceptance; its greater density allows the user to put
more information onto the tag. Many scanners, in fact, have the
ability to automatically and intelligently switch from one code
to the other without reprogramming. In addition, there are numerous
options regarding bar-code density. Smaller labels, with restricted
real estate, often use a denser bar-code. All things being equal,
we advise a bar-code that has a CPI ("characters per inch")
of no greater than eleven, with the ideal CPI range of four to six.
