Embossed Aluminum Pole Markers, AE
  1. Scope. This specification covers embossed black and yellow aluminum tags. Tags are used to identify poles, transformers, URD or to date utility equipment.
  2. Material. The base material shall be a 0.024" thick aluminum sheet. The aluminum shall be type 5052-H32 or 3003-H12. The aluminum shall be thoroughly cleaned and degreased prior to printing. All sharp edges and burrs shall be removed.
  3. Coating and Printing. The tag shall be coated yellow [orange] by the aluminum supplier, the digit is printed and embossed. Both sides of the tag shall be coated the front with yellow [orange] and the backside with a solid color. The back coating is used to help prevent corrosion of the tag. The base coating shall be an enamel ink and baked at a minimum of 275ºF. The black digit printing type style shall be Helvetica, Univers or Gothic. The colors shall follow the ANSI Z535.1-1991 color codes and shall be as follows:

  1. Embossing. The digit shall have an embossing with a minimal depth of 0.015". The embossing shall register with the black printing of the digit.

  1. Weathering. A tag shall be weathered using ASTM D4329 and UVA 340 lamps. After 7,500 hours of exposure in a QUV weathering deck the tag shall remain readable. Sample of weathered and printed tag shall remain on file at the manufacturer and is available for review by the customer.
  2. Dimensions. The tag shall be ___" high by ____" wide and the legend shall be ____" high.
  3. Corners & Holes. The tag shall have rounded corners to allow it to slide more easily into a plastic or metal carrier.
  4. Packaging. 100 tags shall be packaged in a clear bag and each bag shall have part number, date and manufacturer information printed on it.
  5. Panel. The digits shall fit into either a plastic or aluminum carrier. The aluminum carrier shall have six slots on each end. The aluminum carrier's turned edges align the tags and, after crimping, keep the tags from sliding out. The polyethylene plastic carrier shall also have six slots.
  6. Warranty. Workmanship and quality shall be such that all lettering is sharp, legible, straight, and aligned properly. Smudges, misalignment, mis-wording, misspelling, crooked letters, incorrect color, incorrect materials, and any other problems that show poor quality and workmanship will give sufficient cause to reject any tag. The products are to be guaranteed by the vendor to be free of workmanship or material defect. If, for reasons of workmanship or material defect, the tag becomes unreadable during a period of ten years, the vendor shall replace the tag at no additional charge.
