Aluminum Signs, AN
  1. Scope. This specification covers aluminum signs screen printed using the traditional backed enamel process. Signs are used to warn of hazardous conditions or against unauthorized entry.
  2. Material. The base material shall be an aluminum sheet. The aluminum shall be type 3003-H14. The aluminum shall be thoroughly cleaned and degreased. All sharp edges and burrs shall be removed. The sign shall have a thickness of [63 mils-AN; 25 mils-AL; 20 mils-AP; 40 mils-AM; 93 mils-AV; 125 mils-AO; and 32 mils-ZA].
  3. Overlamination (optional). For "ZA" signs, the printing shall be applied to a calendered vinyl film (see "EV""). This film is then laminated to a 0.032" thick aluminum. For "AP" signs, the print shall be applied to a 0.002" thick polyester film, laminated with a 0.001" thick Tedlar film and then applied to a 0.020" thick aluminum base material.
  4. Coating and Printing. The sign shall be screen-printed using enamel ink and baked to cure. The printing type style shall be Smartsign Clearview unless otherwise specified and shall be black in color. If additional colors are used they shall follow the ANSI Z535.1-1998 color codes and shall be as follows: Similar to:

  1. Weathering. A sign shall be weathered using ASTM D4587-97 and UVA 340 lamps. After 7,500 hours of UV light exposure and 7,500 hours of condensation exposure in a QUV accelerated weathering deck the sign shall remain adhered and readable. Sample of weathered and printed sign shall remain on file at the manufacturer and is available for review by the customer.
  2. Size. The signs shall have the following dimensions: (choose one)

  1. Corners & Holes. The sign unless otherwise specified shall use 0.250" radius rounded corners. The sign shall have four holes, one in each corner. The holes shall have a 0.250" inside diameter The centerline of each hole shall be .375" from the outside edge.
  2. Fence Clips [optional]. For signs that will be hung on a fence, the sign shall be provided with [two, four] aluminum fence clips. The holes in the sign shall be spaced so that the fence clips will properly align themselves to the standard diamond repeat of the chain-link fence, including allowable deviations. Typically, the centerline of the holes shall be spaced 3-1/2" apart. The fence clip shall be fabricated from a 0.125" thick aluminum and a 1/4-20 locking PEM insert. Tamper-proof bolts shall be provided for each hole.
  3. Packaging. Each sign design shall be packaged separately. [Optional] the sign shall be laminated with a removable clear premask to protect the surface of the sign from scratching.
  4. Warranty. Workmanship and quality shall be such that all lettering is sharp, legible, straight, and aligned properly. Smudges, misalignment, mis-wording, misspelling, crooked letters, incorrect color, incorrect materials, and any other problems that show poor quality and workmanship will give sufficient cause to reject any sign. The products are to be guaranteed by the vendor to be free of workmanship or material defect. If, for reasons of workmanship or material defect, the sign becomes unreadable during a period of 10 years, the vendor shall replace the sign at no additional charge.
