Bar-Code Labels, BC
Scope.
This specification covers surface printed polyester bar-code labels laminated with an
exterior grade polyvinyl fluoride (Tedlar) ["BC"] or with a 2 mils clear
polyester ["BD"] or no lamination ["BB"]. Applications include
bar-coding of warehouse racks, tools or transformers.
- Base Material. The base film shall be a 0.002"
thick polyester film, ICI 329 or equivalent. In addition, the base film shall have a
minimum thickness of 0.0013" of a solvent-based, acrylic adhesive and a paper liner.
The liner shall be 90# with a thickness of 0.007".
- Tedlar or Polyester Overlamination
[optional]. The label shall be overlaminated with a 0.001" thick clear Tedlar®
film having a matte, non-glare surface and a 0.001" thick, solvent-based acrylic
adhesive ["BC"] or with a gloss 0.002" thick clear polyester with a
0.001" thick, solvent-based acrylic adhesive. [If no lamination is used the
construction code is "BB".]
- Physical Characteristics. The material shall have

- Adhesive Performance. The adhesive shall be an
acrylic adhesive having the following minimum values:
- Peel Strength (PSTC #1 at 70ºF and a 72 hour dwell)
on Stainless Steel 80 ounces/inch of width
on Polyester 70 ounces/inch of width
- Shear Strength (PSTC #7 at 70ºF) 20 hours
- Weathering. The label shall be weathered using ASTM
D4329 and UVA 340 lamps. After 5,000 hours of exposure in a QUV weathering deck the label
shall remain adhered and readable. Sample of weathered and printed label shall remain on
file at label manufacturer and is available for review by the customer.
- Chemical Resistance. The material shall have the
following resistance to exposure:

- Size. The labels shall have the following
dimensions:
3/4" x 7-1/2"
1-1/4" x 7-1/2"
3-3/8" x 7-1/2"
3" x 13-1/2"
- Ink Color & Printing. The legend and bar-code
shall be printed in black on a white or yellow background. The printing shall be free of
voids or striations.
- Bar-Code. The bar-code shall be printed using Code
128. All bar-codes shall have a rating of "A" using ANSI N10.8/M-1983. A copy of
the bar-code verification and rating report shall be included with each order.
- Magnetic Backing Plate [optional]. To make certain
labels removable and reusable, the label shall be attached to a magnetic backing plate.
The magnetic plate shall be 1/8" longer and wider than its corresponding label. The
plate shall have a thickness of 0.030" and have a magnetic pull of 72 lbs per square
foot.
- Backslit. Labels not having a magnetic backing
plate shall have a backslit liner so that the liner can be easily removed.
- Installation. The labels shall be applied to a
clean, dry surface. Use a 3M Scotchbrite pad (or equivalent) to remove any surface
oxidation, dirt or paint chalking from application surface and to rough up the surface.
After this treatment the surface shall be cleaned with Surface Prep 77 or equal. Labels
shall be applied at temperatures above 40ºF.
- Packaging. 25 labels shall be packaged in a
polyethylene bag or vacuum formed package. The labels shall be packaged in sequential
order. Bags or packages shall be packaged in a corrugated carton. The outside of each box
shall be labeled with the bar-code legend sequence, the part number and/or utility code
number, description and quantity.
- Warranty. Workmanship and quality shall be
such that all lettering is sharp, legible, straight, and aligned properly. Smudges,
misalignment, miss-wording, misspelling, crooked letters, incorrect color, incorrect
materials, and any other problems that show poor quality and workmanship will give
sufficient cause to reject any label. The products are to be guaranteed by the vendor to
be free of workmanship or material defect. If, for reasons of workmanship or material
defect, the label becomes unreadable during a period of five years, the vendor shall
replace the label at no additional charge.

ARE SOLD WITH THE UNDERSTANDING THAT THE USER WILL DETERMINE THEIR ADAPTABILITY FOR HIS
INTENDED USES. WE ARE NOT BOUND BY ANY OTHER WARRANTY, EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED. UNDER NO
CIRCUMSTANCES ARE WE LIABLE FOR ANY LOSS, DAMAGE, EXPENSE OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES OF ANY
KIND ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR INABILITY TO USE OUR PRODUCTS
