FiberTec Embedded Phosphorecent Fiberglass Signs, FP
  1. Scope. This specification covers embedded fiberglass sign, using a phosphorescent layer. Common applications include first aid marking, high voltage signs and fire lane marking. Two different grades of luminescence are described: high grade and economy grade.

  2. Material. The sign shall be constructed from polyester and acrylic resins and a phosphorescent layer. Inks shall be screen or laser printed onto the carrier sheet. Resins shall saturate the outer border, which is printed in a contrasting color.

  3. Physical Properties. The sign shall have the following characteristics:
  • Specific Gravity (ASTM D105)             1.30 g/cc
  • Barcol Hardness (ASTM D2583)          55-60 barcol units
  • Flexural Strength (ASTM D790)           14,000 psi
  • Izod Impact Strength (ASTM D256)      8 ft lb/in of notch
  • Surface Energy                                  43 dynes/cm
  • Tensile Strength at Yield
    (ASTM D882, 638)                             10,000 psi
  • Vicat Softening Temperature               260ºF
  1. UV Stability. The sign shall also be weathered using ASTM D4329 and UVA 340 lamps. After 5,000 hours of exposure in a QUV weathering deck the sign shall remain readable. Sample of weathered and printed sign shall remain on file at the manufacturer and is available for review by the customer.

  2. Finish. The sign shall have a gloss finish.

  3. Flatness & Bubbles. The sign shall lay flat and have an even, non-rippled finish. A wavy surface or trapped air bubbles will not be acceptable. Finished signs shall have a maximum variation of 3/16" in the convex or concave direction when measured perpendicular to the nominal plane of the sign face.

  4. Thickness and Dimensions. The sign shall be 0.100" thick. The sign shall be 10" x 14" or 7" x 10". The phosphorescent material shall be framed by a colored border that matches the print color of the sign. This frame shall be approximately 1" wide.

  5. Corner Radius. The signs shall have 1/8" radius corners.

  6. Luminescence. The two materials each achieve different luminescence values, which are listed as follows:

  7.   FP FK
    MCD/sq in after 1 min 30 --
    MCD/sq in after 10 min 2.0 10
    MCD/sq in after 60 min 0.1 8

[after charged with a light bulb of 1.0 Lux for 5 minutes]

  1. Holes. All signs shall have four holes. The holes shall have a diameter of 1/4". The holes shall not use a brass grommet. The centerline of the holes shall be 7/16" from the edges of the sign.

  2. Chemical Resistance. The material shall have the following resistance to exposure using DIN 42 115 Part 2:

  3. Chemical Rating
    Mild Acids Excellent
    Mild Alkalines & Salt Excellent
    Water Excellent
    Solvents Excellent

  1. Warranty. Workmanship and quality shall be such that all lettering is sharp, legible, straight, and aligned properly. The edges shall be smooth and free of splinters. Smudges, misalignment, mis-wording, misspelling, crooked letters, incorrect color, incorrect materials, and any other problems that show poor quality and workmanship will give sufficient cause to reject any sign or shipment of signs. The products are to be guaranteed by the vendor to be free of workmanship or material defect.
