Self-Laminating, Comformable Labels, HH
  1. Scope. This specification covers vinyl labels used for applications requiring field entry of data and adhesion onto compound curves. Examples include labels used on for write-on padlock labels, pipe markers or hard hat labels. Labels are made of a conformable vinyl that makes them stretchable and therefore to reduce wrinkles when applied to a curve. The construction "W8" adds a clear vinyl, self-laminating flap.
  2. Materials. The base film shall be a 0.0035" thick flexible vinyl film. The base film may either be white or clear. The base film shall have a minimum thickness of 0.001" of a solvent-based, acrylic adhesive and a paper liner. The liner shall be a 90# type with a thickness of 0.007".
  3. Laminate (Optional). A self-laminating film shall have the same characteristics, but must be made of the clear version of the flexible vinyl film. This is construction "W8".
  4. Physical Characteristics. The material shall have the following characteristics:

  5. Property Results
Tensile Strength (ASTM D882) 3,450 psi MD

    3,550 psi TD

    Elongation (ASTM D882) 140% MD

    280% TD

    Minimum Application Temperature 40ºF
    Operating Temperature -40ºF to 175ºF

  1. Adhesive Performance. The adhesive shall be a 0.001" thick acrylic adhesive having the following minimum values:
  • Peel Strength (PSTC #1 at 70ºF and a 72 hour dwell).
on Stainless Steel 40 ounces/in of width
on Acrylic 45 ounces/in of width
on Polypropylene 10 ounces/in of width
  • Sheer Strength (PSTC #7 at 70ºF) 9 hour
  • Tack (ASTM D297975 ounces/in of width
  1. Weathering. The label shall be weathered using ASTM D4329 and UVA 340 lamps. After 5,000 hours of exposure in a QUV weathering deck the label shall remain adhered and readable. Sample of weathered and printed label shall remain on file at label manufacturer and is available for review by the customer.
  2. Chemical Resistance. The material shall have the following resistance to exposure using DIN 42 115 Part 2:

  3. Chemical Rating
    Mild Acids good
    Mild Alkalines & Salt good
    Water excellent
    Solvents Fair

  1. Printing & Processing. Conventional solvent-based or UV vinyl inks shall be used. Labels shall have a backslit liner so that the liner can be easily removed.
  2. Packaging. 25 labels shall be packaged in a polyethylene bag or vacuum formed package. Each bag or package shall be identified with the item description, inspector, date, quantity and part number. Bags or packages shall then be packaged in a corrugated carton. Each carton shall contain only one label design. The outside of each box shall be labeled with the part number and/or utility code number, description and quantity.
  3. Size. The labels shall have the following dimensions ____ height x ______ width
  4. Writable Surface. The base film should be writable with a permanent marking pen. Once completed, remove the paper liner from the clear, self-laminating flap and seal in the writing.
  5. Installation. The labels shall be applied to a clean, dry surface. Use a 3M Scotchbrite pad (or equivalent) to remove any surface oxidation, dirt or chalking from application surface and to rough up the surface. The surface shall then be cleaned with Surface Prep 77 or equal. Labels shall be applied at temperatures above 40ºF. Labels shall be applied from the center out to avoid air bubbles.
  6. Warranty. Workmanship and quality shall be such that all lettering is sharp, legible, straight, and aligned properly. Smudges, misalignment, mis-wording, misspelling, crooked letters, incorrect color, incorrect materials, and any other problems that show poor quality and workmanship will give sufficient cause to reject any label. The products are to be guaranteed by the vendor to be free of workmanship or material defect.
