Metalized Mylar Labels, MM
  1. Scope. This specification covers metalized polyester labels used for luminaire identification or nameplates. The labels have a high heat resistance making them suitable for lamp head applications. Optional Tedlar® laminate imparts greater UV and chemical resistance.
  2. Base Material. The base film shall be a 0.002" thick polyester film with a thin metallic deposit. The metallic coating shall be on the underside of the film, thereby protecting it from abrasion. The base film shall have a minimum thickness of 0.001" of a solvent-based, acrylic adhesive and a paper liner. The liner shall be a 90# type with a thickness of 0.007".
  3. Overlamination [optional]. The label shall be overlaminated with a 0.001" thick clear Tedlarâ film having a 0.001" thick solvent based acrylic adhesive. Standard labels with no laminate have a code of "MM" and Tedlarâ overlaminated labels have a code of "MT"
  4. Physical Characteristics. The material shall have the following characteristics:

  5. Property Results
    Elongation (ASTM D882) 100%
Tensile Strength (ASTM D882) 18,000 psi
    Application Temperature 45ºF
    Operating Temperature -40ºF to 260ºF

  1. Adhesive Performance. The adhesive shall be a 0.001" thick acrylic adhesive having the following minimum values:

  2. Peel Strength (PSTC #1 at 70ºF and a 72 hour dwell)

on Stainless Steel        75 ounces/inch of width
on Polyester                 70 ounces/inch of width
    Shear Strength
    (PSTC #7 at 70ºF)       25 hours

  3. Weathering. A sample label shall be weathered using ASTM D4329 and UVA 340 lamps. After 5,000 hours of exposure in a QUV weathering deck the label shall remain adhered and readable. Sample of weathered and printed label shall remain on file at label manufacturer and is available for review by the customer.
  4. Chemical Resistance. The material shall have the following resistance to exposure:

  5. Chemical MT [overlaminated] Rating MM [standard] Rating
    Mild Acids excellent good
Mild Alkalines & Salt excellent good
    Water excellent excellent
    Solvents excellent good

  1. Backslit & Corners. Labels shall have a backslit liner so that the liner can be easily removed. The edges of the label shall have [square, 3/16" radius] corners.
  2. Size & Printing. Conventional solvent-base inks shall be used. The printing type style shall be Clearview, Helvetica or Univers.
  3. Installation. The labels shall be applied to a clean, dry surface. Use a 3M Scotchbrite pad (or equivalent) to remove any surface oxidation, dirt or paint chalking from application surface and to rough up the surface. After this treatment the surface shall be cleaned with Surface Prep 77 or equal. Labels shall be applied at temperatures above 45ºF.
  4. Packaging. 25 labels shall be packaged in a polyethylene bag or vacuum formed package. Each bag or package shall be identified with the item description, inspector, date, quantity and part number. Bags or packages shall then be packaged in a corrugated carton. Each carton shall contain only one label design. The outside of each box shall be labeled with the part number and/or utility code number, description and quantity.
  5. Warranty. Workmanship and quality shall be such that all lettering is sharp, legible, straight, and aligned properly. Smudges, misalignment, miss-wording, misspelling, crooked letters, incorrect color, incorrect materials, and any other problems that show poor quality and workmanship will give sufficient cause to reject any label. The labels are to be guaranteed by the vendor to be free of workmanship or material defect. If, for reasons of workmanship or material defect, the label becomes unreadable during a period of five years, the vendor shall replace the label at no additional charge.
