Polyester Snap-On and Strap-On Pipe Markers, PJ
  1. Scope. This specification covers pre-coiled, polyester Snap-On and Strap-On markers used to identify pipes [to help comply with ISO 9000 and OSHA Process Safety Management 29 CFR §1910.119 requirements]. They do not require a clean, dry or smooth pipe application surface. The markers shall be surface printed with UV inks, overcoated with a solvent and chemical resistance clear coat and the Snap-On markers shall have a pad of heavy adhesive at the trailing edge of the coil.
  2. Material. The printing shall be a 0.010" thick polyester film (ICI Melinex 339 or equivalent). The adhesive pad shall be a 0.0015" thick solvent-based cross-linking acrylic with a 60# paper liner (3M 467 or equivalent).
  3. Physical Characteristics. The material itself shall have the following characteristics:

  4. Property Results
Elongation at Break (ASTM D882) 110%
Folding Endurance (ASTM D2176) 50,000 cycles
    Tear Strength Initiation (ASTM D1004) 900 g/mil
Tear Strength Propagation (ASTM D1938) 12g/mil
Tensile Strength (ASTM D882) 28,000 psi
    Operating Temperature -40 F –to 250 F

  1. Heat Resistance. The marker shall withstand temperatures of 1600F or less without losing the coil tension. If the adhesive pad or the Strap-On (PQ) is used, the marker shall withstand temperatures of at least 1700F for extended periods or a peak temperature of 2500F The marker is thermally set into a coil at 1800F.
  2. Adhesive Performance. The adhesive pad shall be a 0.0015" thick acrylic adhesive having the following values:
  • Peel Strength (PSTC #1 at 70ºF and a 24 hour dwell)
on Polyester: 50 ounces/inch of width
  • Shear Strength (PSTC #7 at 70ºF) : 5 hours
  1. Weathering. After 2,000 hours of exposure in a QUV weathering deck the marker shall remain adhered and readable. Sample of weathered and printed marker shall remain on file at the pipe marker manufacturer and is available for review by the customer.
  2. Printing & Processing. The marker shall be screen printed with UV cured inks. No adhesive shall be between the printing and the film.
  3. Color Coding. Markers shall meet the color coding and size requirements of ANSI A13.1
  4. Installation. The Snap-On markers ("PJ") shall be snapped around the pipe and sealed using the adhesive strip. The Strap-On markers ("PQ") shall be attached to the pipe with the 3M FastLock attaching mechanism. Additional strapping shall be available for applications requiring more security.
  5. Chemical Resistance. Markers shall have the following resistance:

  6. Chemical Resistance Rating
    Organic Solvents (MEK, Toluene) good
Acids (phosphoric, HCI, Sulfuric, Acetic good
    Alkalides (Sodium Hydroxide) good
    Alcohols (methanol) good
Oil & Grease (SAE 20/40) good

  1. Size. The labels shall have the following dimensions:

  2. Code Pipe Diameter Letter Height (in) Width (inches) Height/Long (inches)

    Snap-On (PJ)
    Z2 3/4" to 2-1/4" 3/4" 8" 10"
    Z3 2-1/2" to 3-1/2" 1-1/4" 12" 14"
    Z6 4" to 8" 1-1/4" 12" 27"

    Strap-On (PJ)
    T8 8"+ 3-1/2" 32" 10"

  1. Strap-On Markers. Larger size pipes use the strap-on construction ("PQ"). This construction is a flat marker that is installed with nylon one-lock system or ties. The one lock system shall be 3M FastLock SJ3440 UV resistant Type 250 or equivalent. System shall be made of nylon and have the stem mushroom pattern and be self -interlocking. Each marker shall have at least four slots, two on top and two on the bottom to accommodate the 1/2" wide FastLock fasteners. An optional pair of slots can be included at the midpoint of each marker.
  2. Warranty. Workmanship and quality shall be such that all lettering is sharp, legible, straight, and aligned properly. Smudges, misalignment, miss-wording, misspelling, crooked letters, incorrect color, incorrect materials, and any other problems that show poor quality and workmanship will give sufficient cause to reject any marker. The products are to be guaranteed by the vendor to be free of workmanship or material defect.
