Polyester
Labels, PP
Scope. This specification covers polyester label including variations
that are writable and/or have a lamination. Typical applications include hazardous
materials labels such as PCB labels, RTK labels and test & calibration labels. The
four variations described in this specification are:
PM: standard label, not writable, no lamination
PP: machine laminated with polyester
W1: writable coating, no lamination
WM: writable coating, self-laminating flap
CO: writable coating with scratch-off pad and self-laminating flap
- Base Material. The base film shall be a 0.002"
thick polyester film, ICI 329 or equivalent. The base film shall have a minimum thickness
of 0.001" of a solvent-based, acrylic adhesive and a paper liner. The liner shall be
a 90# type with a thickness of 0.007". The liner shall be backslit so that it can be
easily removed.
- Writable Coating [optional]. The base film shall
have a writable coating that allows the customer to write his name, account number and
address. The coating shall be receptive to marks from a pencil, ball-point pen or
permanent marker. Pencil marks may be erased without damage to the coating. The coating
shall have the following characteristics:
| Coating Weight |
0.5 lbs per 1,000 sq ft (+/- 6%) |
| Coating Thickness |
0.0003" (+/-0.0001") |
| Densitometer reading using GAM
#126P and a 0.50" sq pencil mark on a square section of coating |
1.14, HB Pencil 1.05, H Pencil
1.00, 2H Pencil |
| Defacement of Writing |
Pencil marks of a 2H pencil
cannot be rubbed off using hand pressure. |
- Polyester Overlamination [optional "C0" and
"WM" only]. The label shall be overlaminated with a 0.001" thick clear
polyester film, ICI 054 or equivalent, having a 0.001" thick solvent-based acrylic
adhesive.
- Polyester Self-Laminating Flap [optional]. The
label shall have an overlaminating flap made of a 0.002" clear polyester film, ICI
054 or equivalent, with a 0.0011" thick solvent-based acrylic adhesive. The flap
shall be pressure sealed at one edge of the label. The part of the overlaminating flap not
pressure sealed shall have a 90 pound white paper liner.
- Physical Characteristics. The material shall have
the following minimum characteristics:
| Property |
Results |
| Elongation at Break (ASTM D882) |
110% |
| Folding Endurance (ASTM D2176) |
50,000 cycles |
| Tear Strength Initiation (ASTM
D1004) |
900 g/mil |
| Tear Strength Propagation (ASTM
D1938) |
12 g/mil |
| Tensile Strength (ASTM D882) |
28,000 psi |
| Application Temperature |
45ºF |
| Operating Temperature |
-40ºF to 260ºF |
- Ink Color & Printing: Conventional solvent-base or UV
inks shall be used. The printing type style shall be Clearview, Helvetica or Univers. For
"CO" labels, the scratch-off pad shall be removable with an ordinary pencil
eraser.
- Adhesive Performance. The base material shall be a
0.001" thick acrylic adhesive having the following minimum values:
- Peel Strength (PSTC #1 at 70ºF and a 72 hour dwell)
on Stainless Steel 80 ounces/inch of width
on Polyester 70 ounces/inch of width
- Shear Strength (PSTC #7 at 70ºF) 20 hours
- Weathering. After 500 hours of exposure in a QUV
weathering deck the label shall remain adhered and readable. Sample of weathered and
printed label shall remain on file at label manufacturer and is available for review by
the customer.
- Chemical Resistance. The material shall have the
following resistance to exposure:
| Chemical |
PM, WM Rating |
W1, PP, CO Rating |
| Mild Acids |
good |
excellent |
| Mild Alkalines & Salt |
Excellent |

- Size. The labels shall have the following dimensions:
(choose one)
1" x 2"
2" x 4"
3" x 3"
3" x 5"
6" x 6"
____ x ____ [custom]
- Packaging. 25 labels shall be packaged in a
polyethylene bag or vacuum formed package. Each bag or package shall be identified with
the item description, inspector, date, quantity and part number. Bags or packages shall
then be packaged in a corrugated carton
- Installation. The labels shall be applied to a
clean, dry surface. Use a 3M Scotchbrite pad (or equivalent) to remove any surface
oxidation, dirt or paint chalking from application surface and to rough up the surface.
After this treatment the surface shall be cleaned with Surface Prep 77 or equal. Labels
shall be applied at temperatures above 45ºF.
- Warranty. Workmanship and quality shall be such
that all lettering is sharp, legible, straight, and aligned properly. Smudges,
misalignment, miss-wording, misspelling, crooked letters, incorrect color, incorrect
materials, and any other problems that show poor quality and workmanship will give
sufficient cause to reject any label. The products are to be guaranteed by the vendor to
