3M Intensity Reflective Labels, RI
  1. Scope. This specification covers digits, labels or signs made from high intensity, retroreflective sheeting made by 3M. The digits made from the reflective film are applied by hand either to the Electromark plastic panel or to a metal surface. The labels shall a heavy adhesive having a high initial tack that is appropriate for rough or textured transformer surfaces.
  2. Government Specifications. The reflective label material shall meet the following criteria:
  • US DOT. Standard specifications for construction of Roads and Bridges on Federal Highway Projects FP-85, November 1989, Section 718-Reflective SheetingType IIIA, Class 1
  • GSA LS-300C. Sheeting and Tape, Reflective: Non-Exposed Lense Reflectivity 2, Class 1
  1. CIE Color Values. The film shall have the following CIE daytime chromaticity corner coordinates:

  1. Daytime Luminance. The film shall have the following Luminance Factors (Cap Y%):

  1. Reflective Intensity. The film shall have the following coefficient of retroreflection (as measured in candelas per footcandle per sq ft):

  1. Thickness. The film shall be fabricated from a 0.0025" thick acrylic adhesive, a 0.010" thick methylacrylate film and a 0.0055" thick blue polyethylene liner.
  2. Adhesive. The adhesive shall be a solvent based acrylic adhesive having the following values (using PSTC #1 at 70ºF and a 24 hour dwell):

  1. Operating Temperature Range. The markers must be capable of operation within the temperature range of -20ºF to +190ºF with no obvious degradation or signs of wear or peeling/flagging.
  2. Printing & Processing. The background of the digits shall be screen printed using 3M Series 880 black, gloss ink. The type face shall be Helvetica or Univers. The decal shall be screen printed in accordance with 3M Instruction and Information Bulletins.
  3. Tab or Backslit. Markers shall have at least a 1/8" tab for easy peeling of the liner. Markers may be packaged individually or on a notebook sheet. The tab on the notebook sheet may be at the margin of the page. Notebook sheets shall have holes in the left margin so that they can be included in a standard three-ring binder.
  4. Packaging. 25 pieces shall be packaged in a polyethylene bag or vacuum formed package. Bags or packages shall be packaged in a corrugated carton. Each carton shall contain the same legend. The outside of each box shall be labeled with the part number, utility code number, description and quantity.
  5. Installation. Markers shall be applied to a clean, dry surface. If the markers are not applied to an Electromark panel, use a 3M Scotchbrite pad (or equivalent) to remove any surface oxidation, dirt or paint chalking from application surface and to rough up the surface. After this treatment the surface shall be cleaned with Surface Prep 77 or equal. Markers shall be applied at temperatures above 40ºF. After proper adhesive cure, markers shall be tamper-resistant. Avoid contamination of the adhesive by keeping hands clean and away from the adhesive surface.
  6. Warranty. The products are to be guaranteed by the vendor to be free of workmanship or material defect. If, for reasons of workmanship or material defect, the marker becomes unreadable during a period of ten years, the vendor shall replace the marker at no additional charge.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES ARE WE LIABLE FOR ANY LOSS, DAMAGE, EXPENSE OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES OF ANY KIND ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR INABILITY TO USE OUR PRODUCTS.
