  1. Scope. This specification covers pressure sensitive decals. Typical uses include transformer labels, truck stripping
  2. Material. The material shall be a cast vinyl Scothcal film manufactured by 3M. The film shall have a thickness of 0.0025" and an adhesive thickness of 0.0015". The 60# liner shall have a thickness of 0.005".
  3. Overlamination (Optional) The label shall be overlaminated with a 0.001" thick clear Tedlar® film having a 0.001" thick solvent based acrylic adhesive (this is for construction "ST").
  4. Physical Characteristics. The material shall have the following characteristics:

  1. Adhesive Performance. The adhesive shall be a solvent-based acrylic adhesive having the following values (using PSTC #1 at 70ºF and a 24 hour dwell):

  1. Chemical Resistance. The base material shall have the following resistance to exposure:

  1. Processing. The decal shall be screen printed in accordance with 3M Instruction Bulletin #DS-XIB-1A "Screen Printing with 3M's 3900 Ink" or #3.4 "Scotchcal Series 9700 UV Inks" and cut in accordance with 3M Instruction Bulletin #DS-X1B-5 "Scoring and Cutting of 3M Scotchcal Sheeting".
  2. Backslit & Corner Round. Labels shall have a backslit liner so that the liner can be easily removed. Corners of the label shall have 1/8" rounded corners.
  3. Ink Color & Printing. 3M series 3900 solvent inks or 3M series 8700 UV inks shall be used. All printing shall be overcoated with 3M clear 3920 or 8720. The printing type style shall be Helvetica or Univers. If colors are used they shall follow the ANSI Z535.1-1998 color codes and shall be as follows:

  1. Size. The labels shall have the following dimensions:

  1. Installation. The labels shall be applied to a clean, dry surface. Use a 3M Scotchbrite pad (or equivalent) to remove any surface oxidation, dirt or paint chalking from application surface and to rough up the surface. After this treatment the surface shall be cleaned with Surface Prep 77 or equal. Labels shall be applied at temperatures above 40ºF.
  2. Packaging. 25 labels shall be packaged in a polyethylene bag or vacuum formed package. Each bag or package shall be identified with the item description, inspector, date, quantity and part number. Bags or packages shall then be packaged in a corrugated carton. Each carton shall contain only one label design. The outside of each box shall be labeled with the part number and/or utility code number, description and quantity.
  3. Warranty. Workmanship and quality shall be such that all lettering is sharp, legible, straight, and aligned properly. Smudges, misalignment, mis-wording, misspelling, crooked letters, incorrect color, incorrect materials, and any other problems that show poor quality and workmanship will give sufficient cause to reject any label. The products are to be guaranteed by the vendor to be free of workmanship or material defect. If, for reasons of workmanship or material defect, the label becomes unreadable during a period of 5 years, the vendor shall replace the label at no additional charge.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES ARE WE LIABLE FOR ANY LOSS, DAMAGE, EXPENSE OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES OF ANY KIND ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR INABILITY TO USE OUR PRODUCTS.
