Porcelain Enamel Tags on Stainless Steel, ZZ
  1. Scope. This specification covers tags used to identify valves, warehouse shelving racks or transmission towers. The porcelain enamel tags are ideal for applications that require very long outdoor life and/or high heat.
  2. Material. The base material shall be a type 304 stainless steel. The base material for the tag shall have a thickness 0.048" and shall weigh approximately 2 pounds per square foot.
  3. Porcelain Enamel Frit. The base steel shall be properly sand-blasted or cleaned and coated with a base coat white frit having a minimum thickness of 0.004". The frit shall be fired at 1,400-1,500ºF. Tags shall be made in accordance with the following specifications:

  • ASTM A424, "Sheet Steel for Porcelain Enameling".
  1. Physical Characteristics. The tag shall have the following characteristics:

    Porcelain Gloss (ASTM C540) at least 50 at 45º at least 50 at 45º
    Dielectric Strength (ASTM D149) 200 volts/mil of P/E
    Operating Temperature -50ºF to 1,500ºF

 

  1. Izod Impact Test. The tag shall withstand an Izod Impact test of 55 inch pounds (ASTM C988) with minimum cracking or damage.
  2. Chemical Resistance. The material shall have the following resistance to exposure:

  1. Weathering. A tag sample shall be weathered using ASTM D4329 and UVA 340 lamps. After 10,000 hours of exposure in a QUV weathering deck the tag shall remain readable. Sample of weathered and printed tag shall remain on file at the manufacturer and is available for review by the customer.
  2. Nuclear Qualifications. Tag shall meet Class 1E requirements for a LOCA accident. Test reports shall be on file that show compliance to IEEE-323-74
  3. Printing & Processing. Ciba-Geigy Porcelain Enamel screen printing pastes shall be used. The printing shall be black on a yellow or white background.
  4. Size. The tags shall have the following dimensions:
  5. 3/4" x 7-1/2"
    1-1/4" x 7-1/2"
    3-3/8" x 7-1/2"
    3" x 13-1/2"

  6. Holes. The tag shall have ____holes. The centerline of each hole shall be ____" from the outside edge.
  7. Eyelets [optional]. Brass, non-corrosive eyelets shall be used in the holes of the tag. The eyelets shall be formed in the holes after the porcelain enameling is complete. The inside diameter of the eyelets shall have a minimum dimension of 1/4".
  8. Bar-Code. The bar-code shall be printed using Code 128. All bar-codes shall have a rating of "A" using ANSI N10.8/M-1983. A copy of the bar-code verification and rating report shall be included with each order.
  9. Packaging. 25 tags shall be packaged in a polyethylene bag or vacuum formed package. The tags shall be packaged in sequential order. Bags or packages shall be packaged in a corrugated carton. The outside of each box shall be labeled with the bar-code legend sequence, the part number and/or utility code number, description and quantity.
  10. Warranty. Workmanship and quality shall be such that all lettering is sharp, legible, straight, and aligned properly. Smudges, misalignment, miss-wording, misspelling, crooked letters, incorrect color, incorrect materials, and any other problems that show poor quality and workmanship will give sufficient cause to reject any tag. The tags are to be guaranteed by the vendor to be free of workmanship or material defect. If, for reasons of workmanship or material defect, the tag becomes unreadable during a period of ten years, the vendor shall replace the tag at no additional charge.
