A True Story
A seven-year-old boy sneaks into a locked, unmanned
substation. There are no signs on the chainlink fence guarding
this side of the substation. As he begins to explore the equipment
inside, he makes contact with a high voltage switch gear and
dies.
Prevent a Tragedy
Each year dozens of children or adults die or
are injured in substation-related accidents. Many more are injured
needlessly. The tragedy is that many of these accidents could
have been prevented with better substation signs.
Although, we can never be sure that a given sign made a difference,
it is important that we recognize that a sign is often the last
line of defense. They should be as effective, as durable and
as conspicuous as possible.
